O1 - Donald Mills Lidded Jar

A seriously big stoneware storage jar. Big, tall and heavy and I am surprised the lid has survived in excellent condition. It has the usual mark and an interesting label on the base. Very well crazed. Donald Mills assisted Eileen and Brigitte in the late 1940's and they worked at his pottery before forming Briglin (See AA p7. to P15. for the early history of Briglin). I assume this was a functional piece? If it was meant to be used then what was it for? Rice? It's too heavy to lift especially when full & it's an odd shape. A hand just about fits inside. It does not look like it's ever been used as it's full of dust. Still, an interesting item and a large heavy vessel. I assume it is date is approximately 1950 (?).

Height 300mm
